Friendly

Burlish Olympic U13 1 v 2 Ferndale Youth

Emilia Sinden 1, Georgia Eaton 1

Yet again Ferndale found themselves without league match today, so we played this friendly against Burlish U13s. We needed a game with bigger opposition in preparation for next week’s semi final against Withymore. The girls were told that they were to treat this game as the semi. Burlish kicked off and were good on the ball but after a little bit of sparing between the two teams we seemed to take control with our passing and all round energetic display. This was to come to the fore when after five mins we scored with a lovely inter flowing move down the right by Molly Maguire and Megan Garbett with Molly playing the ball across the box to the on running Emilia Sinden who latched onto it and half volleyed into the net over the goal keeper. What a fantastic goal and the supporters were going wild as this goal was something special. 1-0 to us. We were in full control of this game with our midfield winning their battles and our wingers being too quick for the Burlish back line. We were creating quite a few chances but couldn’t put them away. Then 5 mins before half time Burlish were on level terms after a drop kick from the keeper bounced over our defence and looked to be comfortably going to our keeper Charleigh Lowe’s hands but then it seemed to take a funny bounce and Charleigh lost control. A little Millay in the box resulted in a scrappy goal for Burlish and a half time score 1-1.

After half time we went out and to be honest there was nothing between both teams, the physical battles were there which is what I had hoped for. The passing was there and the all round energetic display I had asked for was there as well. With the clock running down we had a throw in from the right which Megan took, missed by the Burlish defenders and ended up at the feet of our striker Georgia Eaton who prodded the ball home to make the score 2-1. We held on for the last dying minutes and the final score was 1-2.

Girl of the game this week went to Rhiannon Gower for her all round energy today and her best game of the season. This was a pleasing performance and if we turn up next week we would “give Arsenal” a good game on today’s show.

Really well done girls keep up the good work.

Stourbridge & District Under 12 Girls League Cup Semi-Final

Ferndale Youth U12 1 v 0 Withymoor Colts

Megan Garbett 1

Today saw the much awaited semi-final of the League Cup. With all the players and our mascot arriving on time we knew how focused they were for this game against 2nd in the league Withymoor Colts.

The game kicked off and we were very cautious with our play and let the opposition have the ball for a while, before with our 1st real attack. This came down the left, when a 3 pass move saw Megan Garbett running onto goal, with 2 defenders leaning on her she used her pace and strength to get between them both and slot the ball home in the bottom left hand corner of the net. All the girls went over as 1 to congratulate her. We had another couple of chances in the 1st half but couldn’t convert them and half time finished with a score 1-0.

The half time team talk i warned the girls they needed to remain focused, as our opponents would be hungry for the equaliser, and it wouldn’t be easy defending our slim lead. Everyone was committed to the cause, and Withymoor were very unlucky not to get level on 3 occasions with 2 shots hitting the post and 1 going over the bar. Despite Withymoor being desperate to score our defence were determined not to allow it, and we held on to the final whistle, final score 1-0.

Well done to the girls for reaching their second cup final in two years, their first in this league. Despite the opposition being the league leaders I’m sure if we battle and work hard for each other we will give a good account of ourselves and hopefully secure a cup win. Girl of the Game today went to Emilia Sinden who did everything that was asked of her, but all the players today really deserve credit, as they battled and ran their hearts out for each other in a true show of team work. Also thank you to Withymore for their well battled performance which made for a nail biting and entertaining game.

Well done girls another brilliant performance.

Stourbridge & District Under 12 Girls League Cup Final

Ferndale Youth U12 0 v 1 Gornal East

Today saw us travel to the Dell Stadium in Brierley Hill for the Stourbridge & District League Cup final against league leaders Gornal East. Having played Gornal once already this season we were the definite underdogs as they beat us 8 nil on that occasion, but we not going to let that happen again as we turned up ready to do battle.

We started to play the same format that got us to the final by trying to keep it tight at the back and then hopefully catch them on the break and by enlarge it worked because Gornal only had a couple of efforts on goal which our keeper Charleigh Lowe coped with quite well. In the first half we created very little, with a lot of the play in our half, but we did manage to break a few times, battling for every ball and basically defending the whole of the first half and we went in level at 0-0 half time.

All the girls came off and after a good team talk we went back out with the same game plan of trying to keep it tight but also try to impose ourselves on them more. The second half began and we were progressing more into the game as our first real attack almost bought a rewarding goal, but our final pass went astray and the chance was gone. With 10 mins gone we took 4 attempts to clear the ball on our own 18 yard box, but the ball fell to one of their players, she hit the ball which flew into the bottom right hand corner of the net leaving no chance for Charleigh as it was hit so sweetly. Now we had to come out and have a go, and all credit to the girls they really tried. Then we all thought were going to level the scores when we passed through their defence with 5 mins left. Georgia Eaton ran on to the ball with everyone screaming for her to hit it, but she took one touch to many, the keeper raced out and got the ball by diving right at our on-coming strikers feet, a good save which was applauded by everyone in the stand. With one more effort before the final whistle went the final score was 0-1.

Despite their disappointment they went straight to shake hands with the opposition, to seal an excellent game of football and sportsmanship.

Despite the loss we were all so proud of them, as they should themselves, after all they had got this far and to lose by a single goal was a fantastic result.

The Girl of the Game trophy, which was picked by the officials, was defender Emilia Sinden who was fantastic. To finish, a good performance and only to lose 1 nil to a team that are going to win everything in this league this season is a fantastic result, and it should give us the kick now to get a few more points in the league matches we have left this season.

Well done girls from a very proud management team and parents.
